do you have Sensitive Or sensitized Skin?
What is the difference between sensitive skin and sensitized skin?
Sensitive skin: is skin that is easily irritated or reactive. It refers to an intrinsic skin type that is influenced by genetics. Sensitive skin can not be reversed but it can be cared for.
Sensitized skin: It is not a skin type but rather a skin condition as a result of disruption of the skin’s lipid barrier. Sensitized skin can happen to anyone regardless of genes. It often occurs after excessive use of over exfoliation, excessive AHA/BHAs, excess and/or skincare product use, cold harsh weather. Sensitized skin can be reversed by withdrawal of the trigger.
How can you best treat sensitive skin? (i.e. products to use/avoid)
Frequent application of emollients with ceramides, glycerin, petrolatum, dimethicone, fats and oils
Harsh mechanical exfoliants should be avoided.
Chemical exfoliants (AHAs/BHAs/retinoids) should also be avoided.
Avoid fragrance and harsh chemicals.
Use cleansers and toners that help restore pH balance.
Ensure products are fragrance-free.
What is the best way to address sensitized skin?
Take a break from chemical exfoliants (AHAs/BHAs/retinoids) until skin recovers from being sensitized.
Use gentle hydrating cleansers.
Apply ceramide-based moisturizers at least twice daily.
Avoid products with a high alcohol content.
How can you prevent the skin from becoming sensitized?
Limit the number of skincare products used.
Avoid scrubs and harsh exfoliants.
Always moisturize. Look for moisturizers that contain ceramides and hyaluronic acid.
Avoid products with fragrance.
